Artificial Intelligence, Play Therapy, and Ethics: Navigating the New Frontier (Home Study)

Alvin Bonds II, Ph.D., LPC/MHSP, LMFT, RPT-S

This is a non-contact HOME STUDY training.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping how clinicians document, communicate, and conceptualize client care. Play therapists now encounter smart toys, digital sandtrays, and AI-driven tools that challenge traditional understandings of confidentiality, consent, and therapeutic presence.

This 3-hour experiential workshop examines the ethical implications of AI integration in play therapy through the framework of the APT Best Practices and current professional ethical codes. Participants will explore how these guiding standards inform responsible innovation and help maintain the centrality of play, relationship, and safety in the therapeutic process. Through interactive case work and reflection, attendees will develop clear frameworks and language for informed, ethical, and developmentally appropriate AI use in play therapy.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify at least three ethical principles (ACA, AAMFT, or NASW) that apply to the use of AI in play therapy.
  2. Describe the potential benefits and risks associated with AI-assisted tools or digital play materials.
  3. Identify at least three ways to incorporate APT Best Practices in play therapy involving the use of artificial intelligence (AI).
  4. Identify and apply ethical decision-making models to analyze AI-related dilemmas in play therapy.
  5. Develop practical strategies for maintaining therapeutic presence, play-based integrity, and client trust while implementing AI technologies in practice.
